 ImAm Mosque mihrab – ISFAHAN, IRAN 

This piece is inspired by the Mihrab (prayer niche) of Imam Mosque situated in the beautiful city of Isfahan, Iran. The outer border consists of Cobalt glazed glass and White Marble tiles to honour the tile-work used in the original architectural revetment of the Mosque.

Imam Mosque is well known as the Persian Architectural masterpiece. It was created by order of Shah Abbas I of Persia in the 16^th century. It is also depicted on the Iranian 20,000 Rial currency note. Cobalt Blue, Turquoise and Gold tiles are seen as a common colour scheme all throughout Isfahan’s Mosques, with a combination of Quranic calligraphy, Vegetal Arabesque forms and Geometric patterns, but used with great variations of style in every Mosque of Isfahan.

The Mihrab (Prayer Niche) of Imam Mosque is currently displayed in the Islamic Art section of the Cleveland Museum of Art, and is well-known as one of the greatest architectural monuments of the Muslim World.

madrasa imami Mihrab – Isfahan, Iran 

A prayer Niche (Mihrab) indicates the direction of Mecca, which is associated with the direction in which Muslims perform their daily prayers. The original Mihrab is created out of polychrome -glazed cut tiles set into mortar.  The intense amount of detail in this masterpiece represents the devotion the  craftsmen had for beautifying the experience of worshiping their creator. This Mihrab now stands in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and is known as the one of the greatest architectural masterpieces in their entire collection. This painting is inspired by the beautiful Mihrab of the Metropolitan Museum and has the Ayat – ul Kursi (verse of the throne 2:255) from the Quran written in Arabic calligraphy on the outer border of the Mihrab. 

Translation: Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.  (Surah Al-Baqarah : 255)

Aya sofia Iznik Tile

This painting is inspired by the beautiful Ottoman style iznik ceramic tiles of the Sultan Selim II Mausoleum’s entrance.  It was ordered by Sultan Selim II himself to have his Tomb built by the Ottoman Architectural master, Mimar Sinan. It is an excellent representation of the talented tile workmanship during the Ottoman Period.  It was built in the 16^th century and still exists to this day in the Mausoleum of Sultan Selim II, Aya Sofia, Sultanahmet, Istanbul, Turkey.

MARRIAGE

Outer border: And of His signs is that He created you from dust; then, suddenly you were human beings dispersing [throughout the earth]. (30:20)
